1030 - 1115  Good intentions, detrimental effects: why foreign aid experts harm young democracies. Dr. Susanne Koch, Technical University of Munich (TUM).

Dr. Susanne Koch

Dr. Susanne Koch is researcher and lecturer at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in Germany, and research associate of the Centre for Research on Evaluation, Science and Technology (CREST), Stellenbosch University, South Africa. After studying journalism and social sciences, she joined the project “(Scientific) Experts in Developing Democracies” at Bielefeld University and, in that context, carried out research in Tanzania and South Africa. In 2015, she completed her PhD in sociology with distinction and won the university's dissertation award for excellent theses. Since 2016, she is member of the working group ‘Environmental Governance’ at the TUM Chair of Forest and Environmental Policy. Her research focus is on science policy interaction and the uptake of knowledge(s) in developing countries, particularly on the African continent.

Comments for discussion: Professor Stig Jensen, Centre of African Studies, University of Copenhagen. Stig Jensen is professor and former director of the Center of African Studies, University of Copenhagen with a PhD in Geography. He has through a number of research networks been active in a number of programs relevant for African studies, and also contributed to and been on the governing boards of several centers for African Studies, including Nordic Africa Institute.

Lene Møller Madsen, graduated as a geographer, but has worked with education the last decade or so. She is professor at the Department of Science Education of Copenhagen University, where she has worked with a number of the Danish projects on capacity building in both West and East Africa. She is also engaged in the discourse on “geoscience”, and issues like student integration in higher education.

Hanne Kirstine Adriansen is professor at Department of Education, Aarhus University. Trained as a Human Geographer, she has now specialist on spatial aspects of education and knowledge production as well as internationalization. She has worked in both West and North Africa over a number of years.
